Fall and Thanksgiving tableware

Thanksgiving is the one meal of the year where a household seats more people than it owns plates for. That is what this short, dense section is built to solve, and it is why the plates here are the heavy grade rather than the party grade.

Sized for the extended table

The table covers in this section are cut for the long rectangular tables people rent or borrow for the day, not for a kitchen table. Measure before you buy: an eight-foot banquet table wants a cover of about 54 by 108 inches, and the difference between that and a shorter cover is the difference between a finished table and a bare end.

Oval dinner plates turn up in this section for a practical reason — a plate carrying turkey, sides and a roll needs the long axis.

Guest towels

The larger folded napkins listed here are guest towels rather than table napkins, meant for the bathroom and the hand-washing that a house full of visitors generates. They are worth one pack even if the table is set with linen.

How much to buy

For a table of twelve: one pack of dinner plates, one pack of napkins, one cover per table plus one for the sideboard, and a pack of guest towels for the bathroom.

Questions about fall and thanksgiving

Will these plates hold a full Thanksgiving plate of food?

The dinner plates in this section are the heavy grade, which is the one made for a hot, loaded plate. The lighter dessert plates are for pie afterwards.

How many covers do I need?

One per table, and one more than you think — the sideboard, the drinks table and the dessert table all end up covered, and covers are sold in packs of three for that reason.

When does this section sell through?

Fast, and early. Harvest patterns are a six-week run; by the week of the holiday what is left is usually the plain fall colours from the solid range.
